In one of only two Ivy match-ups this weekend, Pennsylvania ran Dartmouth into the ground, winning 48-14. Junior quarterback Gavin Hoffman passed for 336 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Quakers to victory in their Ivy League opener at Franklin Field.
Even though Dartmouth scored on its first drive of the game on a 20-yard run by Aaron Pumerantz, the Big Green lead was short-lived. Hoffman proceeded to march his offense down the field, connecting on 25 of 30 passes. Pennsylvania led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter after having scored on all three of its possessions. They scored again on their fourth possession to start the second quarter, and continued to dominate the second half.
In other action, Yale withstood a second-half rally by Holy Cross to win, 33-27. The Bulldogs were off to a slow start on offense, but their defense was strong from the beginning, stopping the Crusader's first two drives with an interception by Ryan LoProto and a sack courtesy of Stuart Satullo. Then, the offense picked up some speed. Quarterback Peter Lee led his offense to four touchdowns on its next five drives.
Harvard triumphed over host Lafayette on Saturday, 42-19. The Crimson won by effectively shutting down Lafayette's running game, holding the Leopards to 26 rushing yards on 25 attempts. A strong ground game on the part of sophomore tailback Nick Palazzo, who ran for 101 yards, helped Harvard get the ball down the field into scoring position.
Brown won a 29-19 decision against Atlantic 10 team University of Rhode Island on Saturday. The Bears' senior quarterback Eric Webber had a good passing game, completing 37 of 52 for 354 yards. More than half of the time, he connected with senior Stephen Campbell, who set a school record with 19 catches and scored two touchdowns.
Cornell fell to Lehigh, 35-16 as 11,126 fans watched at Goodman Stadium in Ithaca, N.Y. The Mountain Hawks surged back from a 10-7 halftime deficit, scoring twice in the third quarter and twice again in the fourth on the strength of Phil Pleasant and Jamaal Burcher's rushing. The two combined for 202 yards and five touchdowns.
Field Hockey
The Brown Bears (4-3, 0-2 Ivy) lost to Connecticut, 2-1 in overtime, but then won against Rutgers over the weekend in a 4-1 decision. Senior Cara Gardner was named Player of the Week for her goal in the first of those games and for her one goal and two assists in the second.
Columbia (5-2, 0-2 Ivy) won its fifth game of the season at home against Colgate, 3-1. The Lions are off to their best start ever with the help of junior Nikki Campbell, who scored twice this weekend and who ranks fifth in the Ivy League with a total of 15 points.
The Big Red (5-2, 3-0 Ivy) edged out Lehigh in overtime, 3-2, and beat a winless Yale team (0-8, 0-2 Ivy), 2-1, to improve its record. Junior Ashleigh Snelson was the key to Cornell's success, scoring a goal in both games.
Dartmouth (5-1, 2-1 Ivy) sent the Pennsylvania Quakers (1-6, 0-3 Ivy) home with a loss, winning 4-2. Sophomore Lisa Thomas had a pair of goals to herself, pushing her up to sixth in the league's scoring rankings with 14 points.
Harvard (5-3, 2-0 Ivy) struggled this week, dropping two games to New England opponents Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Both were lost by the slimmest of margins. The Crimson fell to Massachusetts in the second overtime by a score of 1-0 and was outplayed by New Hampshire in a 4-3 defeat.
The Princeton Tigers (5-1, 3-0 Ivy) lost to nationally ranked Maryland 2-0 at home. Even sophomore Kelly Baril's 14 saves were not enough to hold off the Terappin offense.
Men's Soccer
Brown (4-3-1, 1-0 Ivy) dropped two straight over the weekend, losing to Clemson, 2-1, and Furman, 2-0, at the Clemson Invitational. First-year Adom Crew scored his first career goal on an assist from senior Marcio to cut the Clemson lead to one goal, but the Bears could not keep the attack going.
Columbia (3-3-1, 1-0 Ivy) defeated defending Ivy Champions Princeton (4-3, 0-2 Ivy) this weekend in a shutout 1-0 victory over the Tigers. Sophomore Michael Ching's second goal of the season came in the fourth minute. Princeton's offense tried to even the score during the rest of the game, but senior goalkeeper Matt Hill and a strong Columbia defense stepped up to make big saves.
Cornell (4-3, 1-1 Ivy) split its two games last week, winning against Colgate on the road in a 3-1 decision and losing to Yale 3-0 at home. Senior Adam Skumawitz's scored two goals in the game against Colgate, but Cornell's offense was helpless against the Bulldogs.
Dartmouth (5-2, 2-0 Ivy) has allowed just one goal in its last three games after giving up 11 goals in the first four games of the season. The Big Green defeated Vermont and Pennsylvania (3-4, 0-2 Ivy) last week, both by a score of 1-0.
Harvard (4-2-1, 0-1 Ivy) handled local rivals Northeastern and Boston College, winning 2-1 and 1-0 respectively.
Yale (4-4, 1-0 Ivy) triumphed over Hartford, 1-0, and Cornell, 3-0. Sophomore Suart Yingst had the winning goal in the Hartford game on an assist from first-year Justin Burton.
