Bulldog Records Break as Team Record Falls
Yale senior tailback Robert Carr finally broke the school's
rushing record, overtaking Rashad Bartholomew's former mark in the
team's 17-7 loss to Penn at the Yale Bowl. Carr tallied 167 yards
on the ground against the Quakers to reach 3,047 for his career--a
new Bulldog record. Senior quarterback Alvin Cowan connected with
wide receiver Chandler Henley in the back of the end zone to tie
the game in the first quarter and earn him the school record for
scoring passes in a career (36). The Elis now stand at 1-2 in the
league.
Running Back on Track
After an unusually unproductive performance against Columbia two
weeks ago, Penn junior running back Sam Mathews returned to form
last weekend at Yale, tallying 243 yards of offense for the
Quakers. Mathews rushed for more than 100 yards for the third time
this season, logging 169 yards on 25 carries. With 1,838 yards in
his career, Mathews is now 10th on Pennsylvania's all-time list of
rushers.
Princeton Started it, but Harvard Gets the Last Laugh
After two miscues put the Crimson in a 14-3 deficit in the first
half, Harvard's defense dug in, shutting down Princeton for the
rest of the game. Harvard junior Matt Thomas led the team with 12
tackles, including six for a loss, and had two sacks. Crimson
first-year defensive back Doug Hewlett had three tackles and a
sack, along with an interception that he returned 33 yards to set
up a Harvard touchdown. Princeton came up with just 204 yards of
total offense and finished the game 0-13 on third down
conversions.
Rudd Rips Record-Breaker
Columbia senior kicker Nick Rudd served as the entirety of the
Lions' offensive production in the team's 9-6 win over Dartmouth.
Rudd connected on a season-long 39-yard field goal in the first
quarter, a 31-yarder in the second quarter and a 19-yarder in the
fourth quarter, the 21st of his career, that won the game for the
Lions and gave Rudd the school record for field goals in a
career.
Rex Leads Red's Big Defense
Cornell junior safety Kevin Rex led Cornell in tackles in the
team's 21-17 self-defeat at Brown. The Big Red let up two
touchdowns to negate a 17-7 fourth-quarter lead and hand the game
to the Bears. Other than the fourth-quarter melt-down, Cornell's
defense played a solid game, holding the Bears to 329 offensive
yards and allowing only 88 yards on 24 carries to first-team
All-Ivy running back Nick Hartigan. Cornell has not yet allowed an
opposing back to reach 100 yards this season. Rex had 13 tackles in
the loss, forced a fumble, and recorded a sack. He is the team's
top tackler and sack threat and also leads the team in tackles for
loss, forced fumbles, and interceptions.
