Keeping Warm With a Liquid Coat

When it comes to the cold, I’m sort of a sissy. Growing up in Colorado, I spent countless hours restoring my core temperature by the fireplace or in a hot bath. In dorms, alas, fireplaces are nonexistent, and bathtubs are places for shower shoes, not full-body contact. As with any problem I run into, I like to solve this one with alcohol. Here are a few recipes guaranteed to warm you through the coming winter months.

Whisky Hot Toddy

Bourbon Whisky 1 1⁄2 oz.

Lemon juice 1⁄4 oz.

Sugar Syrup 3⁄4 oz.

Lemon 1 slice

Cloves 1

Hot water 4 oz.

Combine ingredients in a heat-resistant glass, spear lemon wedge with clove, and serve.

Glug

Dry red wine 4 oz.

Whisky 1 oz.

Sugar 2 tsp.

Raisins A handful

Cinnamon stick 1⁄2

Cloves 3

Cardamom pods 3

Combine all ingredients except whisky and bring to a boil. Strain liquid and add whisky.

Bull’s Milk

Whole milk 1 cup

Brandy 1 1⁄2 oz.

Light rum 1 oz.

Cinnamon A pinch

Nutmeg A sprinkle

Powdered sugar 1 tsp.

Heat milk, then add all ingredients and stir.

Hot Buttered Rum

2 or 3 ounces dark rum

Twist lemon peel

Stick cinnamon

2 cloves

Hot sweet cider or water

1 tablespoon sweet butter

Nutmeg

Put the rum, lemon peel, cinnamon and cloves in a mug. Pour the cider or water into the spiced rum. Add the butter. Grate a little nutmeg on top.
