Columbia went into tonight's game against Yale with a chance to extend its three-game win streak, an opportunity to send its three seniors out on a positive note, and a shot at finishing 7-7 in the Ivy League. And for 20 minutes, the team looked like it would wind up with a win against Yale.
But the Lions, as they have so many times this Ivy season, let their halftime lead slip away. Yale outscored Columbia 37-25 in the second half and finished off a season sweep with a 71-65 win.
"I didn't think it was one of our best ways in terms of our intensity, but it wasn't bad" head coach Joe Jones said. "Some things just didn't go our way."
Columbia, who played most of the first half with a lead, went cold in the second, and Yale took advantage of a five-minute scoring drought to seal the victory.
For most of the second half, the Lions could not sink a shot. The team converted 7 of 30 field goal attempts, and did not make any of their 11 three-point attempts.
"Sometimes the shots are not gonna fall, and tonight they didn't," point guard Bret Loscalzo said
Yale, on the other hand, started the game cold and heated up. The team converted 34.3 field goal attempts in the first half and 46.4 in the second. Yale also out rebounded Columbia 45-34.
"The loose balls and rebounds were the whole game," Jones said. "They got them, we didn't get them and that was the bottom line. If we had been able to put two halves together, we would have been in good shape."
