Seniors Scramble to Regroup

"We took in a guy," Tammi Lee, CC '07, said. "I just met him."

Strangers became best friends in the quest to find the lucky number five in this year's senior regroup. With the unusual circumstance of two single five-person suites in Hogan and four in East Campus, approximately 50 percent of five-person groups in regroup could find a home in all-single suites for the next academic year.

Seniors gathered in John Jay Lounge Tuesday evening to try and improve their housing options before accepting the fate of general selection. Some split their groups of four to try for Woodbridge doubles, but the dominant trend lay in finding spare seniors to form groups of five.

"We aren't really sure how to go about it," Cecillia Freeman, CC '07, said. Most students just walked around the crowded lounge asking clusters of people if they would help fill a suite.

"We're trying to solicit another two people to get a five," Drew Bucilla, CC '07, said. When her group found a pair, she screamed with delight.

"It's pretty tame this year," said Steve Estes, CC '06, an employee of Housing Services. He called last year's senior regroup more chaotic and attributed this year's change to a smaller number of students regrouping and the majority of seniors trying for the same suite configuration.

Once groups were called to pick their housing, the chosen cheered and jumped up and down, while those still waiting grumbled or looked longingly at the housing staff.

Hogan suites were gone after minutes, and the remaining EC suites did not last much longer. With only EC exclusion suites still available for the remaining groups of five, many left deciding to try their luck in general selection.

Diana Arnold, SEAS '07, was in one of the two groups that picked Hogan suites and called it "awesome."

"We had the worst housing luck ... until now," Arnold said.

Starting tomorrow, rising juniors will begin to pick their housing, while first-year groups with unfortunately high numbers will end the process of room selection on Monday.
