The women's swimming and diving team had the best season in its history, finishing 2005-2006 with an 8-3 dual meet record and a best-ever third-place finish at the Ivy League Championships.
The Lions began the dual-meet season with an impressive run, winning six of their first seven meets and losing only to defending league champion Harvard. The run included a pool record-performance in the 200-yard freestyle relay by the team of juniors Leslie Bailey and Mary McCue and freshmen Hannah Galey and Casey Weddle on Nov. 18 against Harvard.
Two weeks later against Penn, McCue clinched a narrow 153-147 victory for the Lions with a comeback win in that same relay. The Lions guaranteed a winning Ivy League dual-meet record on Jan. 28 by defeating Cornell 187.5-112.5 in a tri-meet that also included Brown.
Sophomore Amy Krakauer highlighted that meet by sweeping the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events against both schools. However, the team clearly saved its best for last at the Ivy League Championships. After a slow start that put the Lions in sixth place after day one, the team began an impressive charge up the scoreboard.
Six swimmers posted top-eight finishes on day two, led by Krakauer finishing third in the 100 breaststroke and Weddle coming in fifth in the 100 backstroke. The Lions completed the comeback on day three, taking third place from Penn with just one event remaining. Junior Kathryn Taylor, Galey, Weddle, and McCue then clinched the finish by winning the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The relay victory was the Lions' only event victory of the meet and capped off the team's first-ever top-four finish at the Ivy League Championships.
