Throughout this season, defense has been a staple of the women's soccer team's success. On Saturday night, Columbia shone again on defense while exploiting their opponent's back four, downing Penn 1-0 on a 63rd-minute goal by senior Shannon Munoz. The shutout was the Lions' third clean sheet in a row and their first road win in this year's Ivy League campaign.

The first half featured little action as the two teams combined for just three shots. Junior goalkeeper Allison Vespa stopped Penn's only shot of the half, while the Quakers' Sara Rose made two saves for Penn.

During the second half, the Lions pressured and eventually cracked an inexperienced Penn defense. In the 63rd minute, a Penn defender attempted to clear the ball from deep in her own end. Munoz pounced on the botched clearance, knocking the ball down in front of her and settling it for a one-on-one breakaway. A few touches later, she beat substitute goalkeeper Cailly Carroll for her fourth goal of the season.

Penn had chances to tie the match in the closing minutes but was unable to convert. With 10 minutes remaining, the Quakers appeared to tie the match, but an offside flag nullified the goal. Two second-half saves by Vespa and a block by the Lions' defense in the final minute preserved the win.

Senior defender Emma Judkins was very happy with the way the Lions played, particularly on defense. "As a team, we played incredible defense," she said. "We pretty much locked them in their half." Judkins went on to say that the Lions' midfielders and forwards were particularly strong defensively, stopping most of Penn's attacks before reaching midfield.

The victory over Penn moved the Lions' record over .500 for the first time since mid-September. The Light Blue are now 5-4-3, 2-0-1 with seven points in Ivy play. The Lions briefly moved in front of Dartmouth and Yale into first place, before falling into second after the Big Green defeated the Bulldogs 1-0 on Sunday to claim sole possession of the top spot in the Ivy League.

The Lions also extended an impressive shutout streak on Saturday. The Light Blue have not allowed a goal in their last 290 minutes of play, with 200 of those minutes occurring against Ivy foes Brown and Penn.

The Lions will return home next weekend to begin a three-game home stand that will be pivotal in their quest for an Ivy League title. They will open the home stand against Princeton on Saturday.
