Don't be put off by the name "Bach Society." "We'll play any music that's classical with a lower-case 'c,'" notes concert manager Abby Rosebrock, CC '08, noting that the group has performed original pieces in the classical tradition as well as standard classical fare. Columbia's Bach Society has planned its Fall Chamber Concert, featuring composers ranging from Vivaldi to Beethoven, for tonight. The group has planned an eclectic program, featuring "Autumn" from Vivaldi's Four Seasons, a Beethoven piano sonata, and, yes, a few pieces by Bach (notably his English Suite #3 in G minor). The Bach Society is a chorus and orchestra associated with Columbia University, mostly made up of undergraduatess. A sizable number of its performers come from the School of Medicine as well as the New School's Mannes College of Music (home to the Society's conductor). "The Bach Society has a tradition of performing excellent repertoire that has a lot of intellectual and artistic value, and this concert will certainly fit that tradition," says Rosebrock. "It should be a lot of fun."
