The Columbia Musical Theatre Society, or CMTS, is not a bunch of artsy singers who happen to know every song from Rent backward and forward. CMTS had a solid run last semester as the parent group to the productions of Jonathan Larson's Tick, Tick... Boom! and Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, but CMTS may very well become Columbia's only outlet for musical theater. Board member Jacob Green, GS/JTS '09, says "the interest for groups producing musicals is dwindling." Of course, its name suggests that it puts on musicals, but it also has been known to do some straight plays. This season, the society is putting on Brighton Beach Memoirs, a comedy by Neil Simon, as well as the musical fairy tale, Zanna Don't! Regardless of what other groups do, however, it is going to be up to CMTS to bring to the Columbia community what its name promises: musical theater. -Mandie Nowak
