The Columbia women’s golf team opened its fall season over the weekend with the Nittany Lion Invitational at Penn State. The Light Blue took sixth place after three rounds of play over two days, totaling 316-309-310 (935).
Freshman Robin Lee began her first collegiate career by leading the Columbia team with a third place standing after the first day. Lee notched a score of 76 in the first round and 73 in the second, totally 149 for Saturday’s competition. Senior Sara Ovadia, tying for ninth overall and second for the Lions, totaled 152, and junior Stevy Loy tied for 17th after shooting 76 and 78 in the first two rounds of play. The Light Blue totaled 625 for the day after shooting 316 and 209 in the first two rounds.
The Lions’ performances changed in the final round on Sunday morning, as Ovadia shot a 72 and went from ninth place to second place in the competition and finished only four strokes behind tournament winner Callie Kemmer of Yale. Last season, Ovadia just missed all-Ivy honors after an eighth place finish at Ivy League championships. Loy scooped up fourth place at the same event in the spring.
Lee dropped from third to tenth after shooting a 79 in the final round, but made a notable showing for her first collegiate tournament. She finished with a total score of 228.
The team title went to William & Mary, which totaled a score of 909, while the Penn State, Longwood University, Ball State University, and Princeton rounded out the top five. Kemmer, who earned the individual title, shot a 220.
The Lions will be in action again next week as they faces off against the Tigers at the Princeton Invitational. Competition is scheduled for September 19-20.
