» Lions Earn Seventh Win With Shutout

The Columbia field hockey team (7-2,1-2 Ivy) extended its nonconference win streak to seven games with a 1-0 win against Lafayette at Baker Field on Wednesday night.

Junior forward Jane Gartland scored the game's lone goal with 19:12 left in the first half, giving the Lions a slim lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

Gartland took three shots on goal during the game and was able to capitalize off a flurry in front of the set by scoring an unassisted goal off of a rebound, ruining Leopard goalkeeper Kelsey Andersen's otherwise brilliant night during which she recorded eight saves.

Lafayette thwarted all of Columbia's other attempts to score, allowing just that one goal out of nine shot attempts on goal.

Columbia senior goalkeeper Gena Miller protected the Light Blue's slim lead with four saves in the game, including three in the first half, to secure the team's seventh victory of the year.

Gartland was the hero for the Lions, scoring her third goal of the year on a night in which both teams struggled to take whatever opportunities they could get to score.

Sophomore midfielder Julia Garrison, who leads the team with 27 shots, attempted seven shots with five shots on goal, but could not record her fifth goal of the year. Christine Buszczak, who leads the Lions in points, goals, and assists, did not attempt a single shot during the game.

But the night belonged to Columbia's airtight defense, which helped to make up for the low scoring as it held the Leopards to just five shots for the game through all 70 minutes of play.

Columbia will try to continue its stellar play against nonconference foes when it faces off against Holy Cross (4-6) on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1:00 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
