The Columbia field hockey team (9-3, 1-3 Ivy) ended its three-game win streak on Sunday with a 3-1 road loss to Penn. Although the Light Blue has yet to lose to a nonconference opponent, Ivy League matches have proven to be a challenge for the Lions.
At 1-3 in the Ancient Eight, the Light Blue is now tied with Yale for sixth in the league, and with only three league games remaining in the season, it will be difficult for Columbia to attain a spot in the top tier of the league.
Penn started the game with a strong first half, and midfielder Rachel Eng was able to penetrate the circle and score on starting goalkeeper Gena Miller in the 15th minute. Eng followed up 10 minutes later with another goal. After the second score, head coach Katie Beach substituted goalkeeper Erin Conway in place of Miller. But the Lions were unable to reply and were outshot 5-3 in the first half.
In the second half, however, Columbia attempted to rally offensively, and star forward Christine Buszczak was able to score off a penalty corner, bringing victory within reach at 2-1 in the 50th minute. The Lions continued with a flurry of shot attempts, with six in the half as compared to the Quakers’ three. However, the Light Blue was unable to score again after Buszczak’s goal, and three of their shots went wide with the rest blocked. Three minutes from the end of the game, Penn midfielder Kathryn Rose was able to score the final goal to effectively end the game.
The Lions will look for a win against Lehigh on the road on Wednesday before Sunday’s home match against Ivy competitor Dartmouth.
