In a gut-wrencher on Sunday, the Columbia field hockey team dropped its fourth Ivy League contest of the season in a 3-2 overtime loss to Dartmouth at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue.

Dartmouth (5-9, 3-2 Ivy) scored first at the 26:02 mark when Rebecca Sobel fired a goal into the back of the net on an assist from Virginia Peisch. Despite leading the Big Green in penalty corner attempts, 9-1, over the course of the first half, the Lions (10-4, 1-4) went scoreless in that opening frame.

In an effort to get back in the game, the Lions looked to senior Megan Davidson, who has served as a team leader throughout the season. At 41:42, Davidson scooped up a loose ball and took it past the Dartmouth defense to score, tying the game at one.
Kelly Hood responded for Dartmouth at 68:21 with a goal of her own, assisted by Kristen McCormick and Peisch. Shortly thereafter, however, the Lions tied the game again on an unassisted goal by freshman Maggie O’Connor.

Both squads’ defenses took over from there, as neither team was able to muster a score through the end of regulation. It was Dartmouth that struck in overtime as Meghan Everett scored a goal at 82:09.

With O’Connor’s goal, the freshman moved into second on the team with five goals scored this season. The current goals-scored leader is junior Christine Buszczak with six.
The Lions get a chance for redemption next weekend as Columbia heads to New Haven, Conn. to take on Yale (5-9, 1-4 Ivy). Yale is coming off a 3-0 victory on Sunday at Fairfield (4-13).
