The Columbia men’s soccer team traveled to Cambridge this weekend and fell to Harvard in the Lions’ second-to-last game of the season. The Light Blue lost to the Crimson 6-1 on Saturday and are now 3-12-1 on the year and 1-5 in the Ivy League.

The Lions scored their first and only goal in the first half, as sophomore Bayo Adafin put the ball in the net off of an assist from senior Scott Strickland. Later, Harvard forward Baba Omosegbon tied the game 1-1 with help from Alex Chi. Only four minutes later, Andre Akpan assisted on the Crimson’s second goal, scored by John Stamatis. With that assist, Akpan broke Harvard’s career assist record.

Akpan came back to break another school record in the second half. His unassisted goal not only brought the Crimson up to 3-1 against the Lions, but also pushed Akpan into first place on Harvard’s list of career point holders. Kwaku Nyamekye continued his team’s barrage, scoring unassisted 60 minutes in, and Ben Tsuda and Marcel Perl scored two goals within four minutes to end the game.

Harvard considerably outshot Columbia in this battle, with the Crimson shooting nine in the first period and 12 in the second and the Lions going for five and then three. However, Columbia’s defense made a much better showing, as freshmen goalies Alex Aurrichio and Zach Glubiak combined for seven saves.

The Light Blue will finish its 2008 season this weekend with a home game against Cornell on Saturday.
