Black Friday Not Necessarily a Dark Day for Gamers

Even though Black Friday has passed us by, a number of retailers both online and offline are still offering incredible deals on some games that have flown under the radar. Don’t miss out on a number of these great but less-publicized titles—here are a few that you can find simply by hitting the Web.

For those of you planning on heading to medical school, you shouldn’t miss Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 for the Nintendo DS or Trauma Center: New Blood for the Wii. Both games are heavily discounted as retailers look to move some excess stock, but both are excellent—players virtually treat patients for a number of conditions both fictional and real. As a fun diversion, the Wii version has an unofficial two-player mode in which one player functions as the nurse by holding the Wii nunchuck and selecting the tools as the first player calls them out. It’s a difficult game, so it will last you a while.

Amazon.com is offering specials on a number of PC games, including Far Cry 2 for under $20 and Pure for only $5. Far Cry 2 is the sequel to 2004’s Far Cry, but it’s only loosely affiliated. Far Cry 2 takes place in an “open world” (think GTA) setting in an unnamed war-torn country in Africa. You’re in the mix looking for conflict diamonds and trying to take out a man named the “Jackal,” who is arming every man, woman, and child to the teeth. The game is really beautiful and also quite innovative—players get malaria upon arrival in Africa, so you need to balance your health and your desire for diamonds as you play.

Pure is an off-road ATV racing game in the vein of ATV Offroad Fury on the PlayStation 2. It places a large emphasis on performing acrobatic tricks as well as racing, so there is quite a bit of skill involved. With a number of multiplayer modes, this deal should add lots of players into the environment. Speaking of environments, the game is another looker for sure.

On that note, if you’re in the market for a looker and you have a Wii, Okami is the best you can possibly get. Okami’s graphics are done in the style of a Japanese sumi-e painting, so the aesthetics of the game are constantly unique and always breathtaking. The gameplay is reminiscent of Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda series, with a series of dungeons to trawl, bosses to beat, and abilities to learn. Instead of playing as a human, you play as the goddess Amaterasu who has come back to save Japan in the form of a white wolf. She interacts with the world through a paintbrush attached to her tail, which makes for a fun and refreshing gameplay mechanic. A number of retailers are heavily discounting Okami, which tragically bombed on both the PS2 and the Wii.

Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 came out in September and sold like ice cream in the middle of January. It’s a competent tactical shooter and the game is written and presented in the style of HBO’s Band of Brothers, so war buffs should get something out of the game even if they aren’t traditionally shooter fans. This poor bomb is being as heavily discounted as 60% in some retailers, so be on the lookout.
