The women’s swimming and diving team ushered in the new year with an impressive victory, defeating Bucknell 155-88 (the largest margin of victory this season) on Sunday.

In the first event, the one-meter dive, senior Shannon Hosey placed first with 268.59 points. Senior Joanna Corby, competing for the first time this season, added to Columbia’s success by placing second in the
event, 21.92 points behind Hosey.

Freshmen also made important contributions throughout the meet with two first-place finishes in individual events. Isabelle Vandenbroucke and Paige Endsley touched the wall first in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle, respectively.

During the 200 free, Endsley was followed by freshman Nicole Marsh and sophomore Emily Brown, giving the Lions a sweep of the top three positions, a feat they later repeated in the 50-yard freestyle.

Junior Allison Hobbs finished first in both the 50-yard and the 100-yard freestyles in 24.14 and 53.95, respectively. Lauren Fraley, Mariele Dunn, Christina Hughes, and Hannah Galey touched the wall first in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:55.20, with Bucknell placing second with a 4:01.29 finish. Dunn also took first in her individual event, the 200-yard IM, finishing in 2:11.43.

Senior Bridgette McCabe and junior Delghir Urubshurow helped expand the Lions’ lead with first-place wins in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.19) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.97).

The most exciting event of the meet proved to be the last. The 200 freestyle relay team of Fraley, Hobbs, Hughes, and Galey set a new pool record, finishing with a time of 1:36.92, 2.55 seconds ahead of the second-place team and .49 seconds faster than the prior record-holders.

With the win, the Lions improved to 5-1 for the dual meet season while the Bison fell to 6-3.

Columbia will next take on Ivy foe Cornell in Ithaca on Saturday at 3:30 P.M., followed by a meet at home on Sunday against Wagner at 1 p.m.
