The Columbia track and field team will compete in the Sam Howell Invitational and the Quaker Invitational this weekend, after opening its spring season last weekend at the Dick Shea Invitational. The Lions will face six Ivy League opponents over both meets this weekend.
The only two first-place finishes for the Lions came from two freshmen—Sharay Hale and Kyra Caldwell. Hale won the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:15.51 and Caldwell won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.82. Sophomore Jacqui Brown had an impressive performance as well, running the 400-meter dash in 58.76, good for second place. Brown finished just six-tenths of a second behind the top finisher, Melody Lopez-Bernstein of St. Peter’s College.
On the men’s side, another freshman provided an impressive performance: Justin Holloman came in third in the 800-meter dash with a time of 1:59.75. Junior Sean Quinn also gave a solid performance for the Light Blue, finishing fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.87.
First up for the Lions this weekend is the Sam Howell Invitational, hosted by Princeton on Friday. There will be sixteen other teams competing against the Columbia, including Ivy foes Princeton, Dartmouth, and Yale. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and to continue through Saturday at Weaver Track and Field Stadium. The distance events are all scheduled for Friday, while all mid-distance and sprinting events will take place Saturday.
The Lions will only compete in the distance events on Friday, however, as they will head to Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in the Quaker Invitational the next day. There will be 40 men’s and women’s teams competing on Saturday, including Cornell, Harvard, and Penn. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Franklin Field.
