After last weekend’s triumphs at the University of North Carolina and Arizona State University, the Columbia track and field team will travel to Princeton on Friday to compete in the Larry Ellis Invitational. This meet marks the team’s return to competition with Ivy League opponents.
The Lions had various successes last weekend both in Chapel Hill and in Phoenix. At ASU’s Sun Angel Track Classic, standout sophomore Jeff Moriarty won the 800-meter premiere run with a time of 1:48.82, achieving an NCAA qualifying time. Liam Boylan-Pett, a former Lion and a current runner for Georgetown, took the title in the men’s 1500 premiere . At UNC, freshman Sharay Hale took first in the 400-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash, and freshman Kyra Caldwell managed a great third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.
The Larry Ellis Invitational will be a good opportunity for the Light Blue to continue its impressive season and compete against many of the best track and field teams on the east coast. Georgetown, Navy, Lehigh, and Rutgers are among the teams that will compete. The Lions will also run against Ivy League foes Princeton, Brown, Yale, and Penn at this two-day event.
The exceptional results from last weekend have heightened hopes for Moriarty’s, Hale’s, and Caldwell’s performances this weekend. The only solo event Moriarty will be competing in is Friday’s 1500-meter run—for which he currently holds the indoor Ivy League title—while Hale will race in both the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Caldwell will return to the track for both the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles, hopefully bringing the momentum from previous meets to down the competition. The Lions will participate in most events with several runners, though no Columbia contestants will participate in discus and shot put.
The Larry Ellis Invitational will take place from Friday April 17 until Saturday April 18, in Princeton, N.J.
