WEB EXCLUSIVE. Ten Democrats attended Manhattan District Attorney candidate Leslie Crocker Snyder’s fundraiser at the Empire Hotel in Midtown on Tuesday night.

Snyder, whose primary bid for Defense Attorney will begin on Sept. 15, spoke at the event about her qualifications for the position and expressed that young people should become more involved in her campaign. Her relationship with the College Democrats began when she came to Columbia to speak last month.

“Leslie reached out to us and came and we were blown away by her,” former College Democrats Speakers Coordinator Stephanie Goodsell, CC
’09, said, pointing to her determination to “fight for the causes and beliefs … within the more progressive stances that Columbia Dems tend to have.”

College Democrats also explained that her feminine perspective added to Snyder's appeal. They said that her opinion is a way to open students’ minds to new
politicians and issues.

During her speech, Snyder discussed her role as a justice on the New York State Supreme Court, in which she advocated alternative punishments to incarceration for convicted criminals. She also spoke about a revision of the Rockefeller Drug Laws.

The fundraiser closed with a brief question and answer session. While many College Democrats support Snyder, Lead Activist Barry Weinberg, CC ’12, explained that a University policy prohibits any official camp group endorsement of candidates for office. But Weinberg said that he believes such a policy allows for an array of opinions
and fosters healthy debate.

The College Democrats say they remain hopeful that Snyder will win, but they acknowledged that she might not be victorious.

“I think you win some, you lose some,” Lead Activist Sarah Sheinman, BC ’12, said. “It’s better to get involved and lose than get not involved at all.”
