Gunshots were fired in Morningside Heights on Tuesday evening.
People in the neighborhood reported hearing sounds of shots fired at around 9:30 at night near 109th street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues.
"We were at the bar when it happened," said Eushshi, a bartender at the nearby pub La Negrita. "I heard six, seven shots straight off the bat. A couple other people thought they were firecrackers, but I know gunshots when I hear them. I saw people running and ducking," said Eushshi, who is accustomed to the sound from the din in her Washington Heights neighborhood.
Police arrived quickly to clear the scene, and a throng of gawkers gathered around the closed-down street. "A lot of people were really shocked by it happening here," Eushshi said.
The violence arose from a dispute “in the vicinity of 60 W. 109 Street,” according to a statement released by the Columbia Department of Public Safety on Wednesday. One person, who is not affiliated with the University, was treated for cuts from flying glass.
Vice President for Public Safety James McShane told Spectator that the Police Department said they arrested someone in relation to the dispute.
"From what I understand, a stray bullet went down the street," Eushshi added.
