One streak ended while another continued as the Columbia football team lost to Dartmouth, 28-6, on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Hanover. The victory marked Dartmouth's first of the season and broke a string of 17 straight losses for the Big Green while the Lions dropped their third consecutive contest.
The Big Green raced ahead in the first quarter as Dartmouth sophomore quarterback Conner Kempe--starting his second game of the season after senior Alex Jenny dislocated his elbow three weeks ago--tossed a pair of touchdown passes. The star of the game, though, was Big Green running back Nick Schwieger, who tore apart the Columbia defense en route to setting the Darmouth record for rushing yards in a game with 244. Schwieger put the exclamation point on the victory with a 66-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
The Columbia offense had chances to score early in the game, but didn't get on the board until the fourth quarter when the Lions were already trailing 21-0. The Lions' touchdown came on a one-yard run by quarterback Millicent Olawale, but the point after failed. Before the touchdown the Light Blue had struggled to finish drives, as freshman kicker Greg Guttas missed a 35-yard field goal--he later missed a 37-yard attempt--and later Olawale threw an interception in the red zone, one of two on the day for the senior captain.
Dartmouth's defense, which had given up at least 30 points in each of its first five games, kept the Lions' offense at bay and put up some points to boot. In the fourth quarter with the Big Green leading 14-0, cornerback Shawn Abuhoff leveled Columbia receiver Austin Knowlin, jarring the ball loose. It was picked up by Big Green defensive end Charles Bay and he returned it for a touchdown.
