Each new season brings new opportunities. The 2010 women’s lacrosse season is set to start this Sunday against Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J. The last time these teams met, Columbia came away with a 14-10 victory—the first of a five-game win streak that started the season.

Last season, the Lions finished 9-7 overall and 1-6 Ivy. 2009 could be described as a year of streaks for the Light Blue, as it won and lost in bunches. After last year’s successful start, Columbia lost six straight contests, five of which came against Ivy League opponents. The Lions would finish the season on a strong note though, winning four of their last five games.

The lacrosse team’s roster took a hit this year, losing last year’s leading scorer to graduation. Holly Glynn led the team with 45 goals and 53 points. While losing Glynn will hurt the Lions’ offense, not all hope is lost. The Light Blue will be returning Brittany Shannon, who posted 43 goals, nine assists, and 52 points last season. Defensively, Columbia will rely on sophomore goalkeeper Karlee Blank. Blank played in three games last season, compiling 10 saves in 71:58 minutes of play.

This weekend against Monmouth, the Lions will look to start off the 2010 season like they did 2009. Early victories are essential for building momentum as Columbia will face its first Ivy opponent, Cornell, on March 10.
