The season of preparation is over. It’s finally here. This weekend, the Columbia wrestling team will compete in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) championship, hosted by Lehigh University. The Lions will enter the weekend with an 8-10 overall record, 2-4 Ivy.
The 2009-10 wrestling season has been marked by streaks. While the Lions have enjoyed short stints of success, including a three-match winning streak in January, they have also slumped through a six-match losing streak that lasted nearly an entire month. However, the Light Blue men will enter the weekend coming off of two victories over Harvard and Brown.
During the championships, Columbia will rely on a handful of wrestlers who have performed well all season, including junior Eren Civan, sophomore Kevin Lester, and senior Lou Miller, all of whom received All-Ivy recognition late last month. Civan earned a spot on the All-Ivy second team with a 23-10 overall record and a 5-1 Ivy record. Lester, also named to the All-Ivy second team, is 19-10 on the year with a team-high seven pins. Miller was named All-Ivy honorable mention and is 16-9 on the season. Another key wrestler for the Lions is freshman Kyle Gilchrist. Gilchrist, in the 125 pound weight class, has put together a 24-10 overall record with a team-leading five major decision.
This weekend’s action will be the last competition for seniors Cary Aldrich, Matt Dunn, and Lou Miller. The championships start Saturday, Mar. 6 and will continue through Sunday.
