Columbia women’s basketball clinched at least a share of third place with a resounding 64-47 win over Yale. The Lions can secure outright third by defeating Brown on Mar. 6 at home or with a Yale loss to Cornell.

Columbia immediately jumped ahead early, stifling the Bulldog offense with a tenacious defense. The Lions forced eight turnovers in the first ten minutes of play and held Yale to just 21 halftime points on their way to a 33-21 halftime edge. The team also prevented Yoyo Greenfield from scoring in the first half and held her to only four points the entire game.

This was an upstart reversal from the last time these two teams played. In that meeting–an 81-74 loss for Columbia–Yale scored 47 points by halftime and Greenfield torched the Columbia defense with 20 points.

The difference in this game came from senior Sara Yee’s outstanding defensive performance. The Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year was matched up mostly on Greenfield and won that matchup, finishing with four steals, matching the entire Yale team.

Offensively, the Lions were also outstanding. Judie Lomax recorded an uncanny 21 points and 21 rebounds while senior Danielle Browne also chipped in with 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting.

With the win, Columbia’s senior class will finish its four-year tenure as the winningest class in Columbia history.
