Both men’s and women’s golf finished out this weekend well, beating top competitors. The men placed third overall by the completion of the Navy Spring Invitational in Annapolis, Md. The Light Blue finished with a score of 306 in round two, beating out 18 other teams. At Navy, all-Ivy junior Clark Granum had the best finish of his Columbia career to date, with a closing score of one-over-par 72. His second-place victory was due largely to how consistently he played throughout the tournament. He posted 25 pars in 36 holes, the fourth most as an individual. Granum did especially well on the par-3 holes, with a stroke average of 3, which was second best in the tournament. He also had a 4.12 par-4 average.
Columbia also had help from freshman Michael Yiu and sophomore Brendan Doyle, who each shot identical rounds of 74 and finished in 10th place on Sunday. Yiu—in addition to junior Justin Lee, who finished with 153 in a tie for 28th place—led with 26 pars. Doyle posted a 4.08 stroke average on par-4 holes, outdoing his teammates and placing second only to Ben Hayes of Navy. Freshman Ford Fisher and senior Cashel Rosier scored 157 and 158, respectively.
Women’s golf competed at the fourth annual Roar-EE Invitational this weekend and took fifth place. The Lions entered two teams, the Columbia Blue and the Columbia White. The white team was led by senior Nancy Shon, who won the individual title at the invitational, marking the first time a Columbia athlete has ever won the Roar-EE Invitational. Shon came out strong, finishing the first round of play in a first-place tie with Yale golfer Alexandra Lipa. Shon shot a 77 in the second round of action, which was enough to give her the first-place finish with a total score of 148 (+4).
The blue team’s top player was sophomore Lynda Kwon, who tied Shon with 13 pars in the first round and eventually finished ninth overall with a score of 152. Following her, junior Jasmine Chean finished in 25th place. On Shon’s own team, junior Katherine Durnan started off strong but struggled toward the stretch and finished with a second-round score of 85, good for 39th place. Junior Jennifer Adyorough joined Durnan with a score of 161, and freshman Allison Oakes and sophomore Robin Lee both finished in 35th place. Rounding out the Columbia squad, senior Stevy Loy concluded her tournament with a score of 164, and freshman Ashley Zambito finished with a score of 188.
Men’s and women’s golf will compete in the Ivy League Championships on April 23 in Springfield, N.J. to conclude their seasons.
