The Light Blue volleyball team (0-3) came back winless from the Wildcat Challenge, with losses against Northwestern, Boise State, and Belmont. Sophomore Atlanta Moye-McLaren, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, stood out with a team-leading 33 kills and also contributed 28 digs over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Lions lost in three straight sets to Northwestern (4-2). Despite having a stronger net presence with 16 blocks compared to the Wildcats’ three, Columbia struggled offensively with 19 hitting errors. McLaren and fellow sophomore Lucy Tilton led the team in kills, with nine and eight, respectively. Freshman Jennifer Petrovich also contributed a team-leading 52 assists over the first two contests.
In their next game later that night, the Lions lost 3-1 to Boise State (3-3). The Lions dropped the first two sets, 16-25 and 22-25, but held on for a close 28-26 third set win to keep the match alive. Boise State took the momentum back and finished out the match with a 25-22 win.
The Lions looked to rebound on Day 2 of the tournament against Belmont (2-6), but ultimately lost in the fifth tiebreaker set, 15-12.
They came out to a slow start, dropping the first two sets against the Bruins, 15-25 and 19-25. But the Lions found a way to bounce back, as they took the next two sets 25-18, 25-14.
Tilton sparked a 7-1 run midway through the third set, with three consecutive kills. Columbia closed out the set and forced a fourth set. The score was neck and neck through the first part of the fourth, but at 14-14, the Light Blue came to life and went on an 11-point run to close out the set.
But the momentum didn’t last, as Belmont took an early lead in the fifth and held on for the win.
Columbia returns to action at home for the Columbia Invitational from Sept. 13-14 in Levien Gymnasium.
