The field hockey team (2-2) had a tough weekend against strong nonconference opponents, losing 9-2 to No. 2 Marylandon Saturday before dropping a 4-1 contest to No. 20 American on Sunday. Both games were part of the Terrapin Invitational in College Park, Md. The Lions were shut out until the 59th minute of Saturday’s contest when sophomore Leah Matthews hit the back of the net for the first time this season to make the score 9-1. The Lions’ other goal came 10 minutes later from sophomore Lindsey Walter, who scored for the first time in her career. Though the following day’s game was closer, only junior midfielder Zoe Blake could hit pay dirt in the 20th minute. The Lions will begin Ivy play on Friday at home against Brown.
Following its second-place finish at the Bucknell Invitational last week, the women’s golf team continued its fall season by coming in third at the Princeton Invitational this past weekend at Springdale Golf Club. After winning in Lewisberg, senior Michelle Piyapattra finished as the Invitational’s runner-up to Harvard’s Tiffany Lim. Piyapattra ended one under par, three strokes behind Lim. Freshman Jackie Chulya, who also finished in the top 10, came in sixth at six over for the competition. The team will hold its annual Alumni Tournament in Tuxedo Park, N.Y. next weekend before competing in Penn State’s Nittany Lion Invitational starting Sept. 27.
Junior Brandon Jowers came in second overall for the first men’s golf competition of the fall on Saturday at the Doc Gimmler Tournament at Bethpage State Park Golf Course in Farmingdale, N.Y. With a score of 200, Jowers finished just one stroke under the champion, Joe Willis of Yale. As a team, the Lions finished the first round with a score of 283 and maintained consistency, putting up 282 in the second round and then 274 in the third to secure fifth place overall with 839. Light Blue freshman Christopher Chu also started the season strong, coming in 13th place overall. The Lions are now preparing for the 2013 Golf Alumni Tournament in Tuxedo Park, N.Y., this Friday.
