Sophomore Kanika Vaidya emerged as the star of the Light Blue’s performances this weekend. To start off the year at the Columbia Invitational, Vaidya neatly dispatched her opponents in singles play by beating Gabby Devlin of Amherst 6-3, 6-2 and nationally-ranked Sonya Latycheva of Penn 6-3, 6-3.
As part of the No. 29 duo with Bianca Sanon, Vaidya polished off the three days of play with an 8-4 victory over Penn’s No. 36 pair, Augustina Eskenazi and Latycheva.
Vaidya hit the ground running when she arrived on campus last fall and has not slowed down since her seven-match win streak last spring. She closed the season with the honor of All-Ivy League doubles and second team for singles, not to mention the Ivy League title for the team. Judging from her opening play, Vaidya may be on the road to top those accolades. For her achievements on the court this weekend, Vaidya is Spectator’s Athlete of the Week.
