Over the weekend, history was made for the men’s tennis program. At the Saint Francis ITA All-American Championships, the Lions advanced a doubles team to the quarterfinals of a College Grand Slam event for the first time in program history. The doubles team of juniors Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur advanced past the first round with an 8-3 victory over Tulsa’s Alejandro Espejo and Dylan McCloskey. In the second round, the Lions narrowly defeated Virginia’s No. 8 Mitchell Frank and Mac Styslinger with an 8-3 score. Narayana and Schnur were leading 7-4 before the Cavaliers doubles team fought back to force a tie break. The Light Blue ultimately fell 8-3 to TCU’s Nick Chappell and Will Stein in the quarterfinals, but in simply hitting the first service, Narayana and Schnur set the program record. For its accomplishments in Tulsa, Okla., this weekend, the duo shares Spectator’s Athlete of the Week.
A previous version of this article stated that Schnur and Narayana defeated Frank and Styslinger 8-7 (7). Spectator regrets the error.
