Zabar’s, H&H Bagels, The American Museum of Natural History, and Lincoln Center are just a few things that automatically come to mind when thinking of the Upper West Side. Yet within the intellectual, baby-stroller-filled streets of this neighborhood, inhabitants can find exciting and surprising works of art—easily accessible and absolutely free.

At the Palais de Tokyo gift shop in Paris, one can buy a giant Andy Warhol banana for 150 euros, a Keith Haring espresso-cup set for over 200 euros, and a postcard with the word “fuck” scrawled all over it for 5 euros.

Only one event can bring art lovers from all around the world to the 13.4-mile, cold island of Manhattan: the 11th annual International Fair of New Art, otherwise known as The Armory Show.

With flowers, chocolates, and diamonds, paper greeting cards have become obsolete as Valentine’s Day gifts. Personally, I’d prefer a beautifully designed greeting card over gourmet chocolates and the like any day. For unique (and expensive) cards, Kate’s Paperie is where you’ll need to start. Intricate and hand-made, the children’s cards use princesses, pirates, and colorful animals as the main subject matter. Kate’s also sells all the materials needed to create your very own Valentine. If the trek is too far, Card-o-Mat’s wide selection of reasonably-priced and cleverly designed cards are bound to suffice, even if they’re not hand-made. But if you’re feeling a bit nostalgic, the scratch-n-sniff Winnie-the-Pooh Valentines, which can be found at about any drug store in Manhattan, are my personal favorites.

Any inauguration is a historic event, but today’s seems to have people inspired to dance, sing, and party in unprecedented numbers and with unprecedented enthusiasm. A&E has put together a guide to the cultural side of the inauguration, offering a peek into festivities in the nation’s capital as well as options for Columbia students to celebrate the event all over the city. Froma Yale professor's poetry to Oren Bloomstein’s coffee, Obama’s induction into office has inspired a wide variety of creativity both in Washington, D.C. and just down the street.

Every stop on the 1 line is a journey into a different world. 168th Street is an encounter with Latin America, full of Spanish-speaking grandfathers and Dominican eateries.
