Here’s the whole hype: while we love our historical survey courses and Music Humanities, until this semester we had never seen a Columbia class break out of the comfortable campus environment; most classes focus instead on students’ acquisition of multiple majors and the entire Western philosophical canon.

Americans’ power in this free-market orgy of profitable abuses lies in using our knowledge of business practices to make different consumer choices. We’d rather vote with our vote than our pocketbooks, but hey, we’ve come to terms with capitalist democracy. Do I buy the child-labor Gap jeans or the more expensive pair from American Apparel?

Last semester’s NROTC activism may not have been the most elegant affair on campus, but it certainly got us thinking over at Shock and Awe headquarters. Even though the vote carried no real weight, the mere fact of polling the student body had demonstrable benefits.
