I jumped into a cab with 20 minutes to get to my dentist appointment across Manhattan. Flustered, I told the driver that I was going to East 116th Street, at First Avenue.

I have a total lack of geographical sense, so it is no wonder that I thought East 116th meant the Upper East Side—Gossip Girl style. I related West 116th with Columbia so, on the other side of the island, I expected there should be something equally grand—a fabulous dentist office ready to fix my smile, for example.
