The Summer I Learned to Drive

Last summer, I learned how to drive.

My parents didn’t teach me. My mom’s friend Amy did. My mom was afraid it would ruin our relationship. Throughout my first year of college, Amy repeatedly told my mom she’d be willing to teach me. That summer, after being home for a month, I picked up the phone to take her up on the offer. I didn’t originally want to go home last summer—when I was in the Bay Area, I went between my parents’ houses, and their schedules dictated what I would do and when.
