Opinion

Year in Review

From September to May, opinion writers have offered thoughtful commentary and passionate arguments on issues relevant to Columbia. Here, we offer selections from columns, op-eds, and staff editorials that drove the debate on campus.

Down to the wire

The reality, though, is that one line in a budget does not necessarily make wireless a priority. The fact that some dorms are projected to have wireless for the coming year does not mean that the entire campus is on its way to becoming free of Ethernet cables.

Summer in China

There's certainly no paucity of media coverage on China, but not much of that reporting comes from our own peers.

Between nations

On Columbia’s campus, you don’t have to look far to find an individual who had to travel thousands of miles—even fly over an ocean—to get here. This Monday, Spectator Opinion hears from three international students on their experiences coming to Columbia from a life abroad.

Letters to the editor

In her April 14 op-ed “An Ivy-educated fashion icon,” Ana Baric writes, “If a female public figure can only receive respect and accolades (that aren’t related to her aesthetic appeal) if she wears pants suits, we have a problem.”

Letters to the Editor

I agree with Emily Rose Jordan’s observation in her April 2nd op-ed “A future for the rest of us” that many of Columbia’s career advising resources are geared towards those who plan to go into professional careers in finance, law, or medicine.

Over There

With two wars in the Middle East and rising challenges to America’s status as the world’s lone superpower, Columbia students cannot afford to ignore issues of international importance.

Discussing discourse

Columbia and its students are famously opinionated about contentious topics, and they feel as passionate about the ways they express their views.

College and Beyond

This Monday, Spectator Opinion asks four alumni to reflect on experiences and lessons from Columbia that shaped a path in their lives.

Women of Faith

Living a religious lifestyle on campus can be tough—living as a religious woman can be even tougher. This Monday, Spectator Opinion asked some of
Columbia’s women of faith to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by their respective religious traditions.
