Turning swimwear into statement pieces is no easy feat. Yet that is exactly what Molly Grad did for her freshman collection at Gottex. In a nod to, “the fusion of technology and luxury,” Grad put her previous stints at Stella McCartney and Yves Saint Laurent to the test. Taking advantage of the most cutting-edge materials such as laminated tulle and plasticized Lycra, she created improved versions of the suits we all know. Contemporary touches like asymmetry, off the shoulder tops and laser cutouts also updated the line. Despite this, the collected lacked a futuristic vibe. Rich, classic colors of coral, cobalt blue, ochre, black and cream added richness to every piece. Grad’s high fashion background was evident in her retro touches of highwaisted bottoms, corseted tops, ruched shoulders and pleated shawls and capes. The embellishment of attached precious stones and gold disk necklaces added even more texture. Still, this left one wondering whatever happened to the old-fashioned yellow polka dot bikini? White silk one-pieces and black sequined beach tops look ethereal when sweeping down the fantasy of the runway, but often fall flat in real life. Grad’s swimwear was most impressive when she successfully managed to find the balance between opulence and functionality that she sought. To achieve that style, choose a simple suit in a strong color and accessorize with gold jewelry.
