Akiko Ogawa showcased expert tailoring and innovative experimentations in textiles for her spring 2008 collection. Many pieces maintained a feminine yet sporty aesthetic in a wide array of color combinations, from subtly tinted alabaster on white (made with fabric paints) and bright lime on pink neon to smokier blends of gray and black. Meanwhile, Ogawa’s use of polyurethane-treated polyester, jersey, silk acetate, metallic lurex, and a healthy dose of patent leather showed an impressive and creative command of diverse materials. One of the highlights was a glossy polyurethane-treated cotton parka that gleamed on the runway. White painted Swarovski crystal necklaces draped across the models’ chests was another eye-catching touch. A few baby doll and bubble dresses seemed to eschew many of the show’s more adventurous turns towards leaner, meaner silhouettes, but added a playful variation to the eclectic mix. The neon-colored jodhpurs in sheer organza, however, did not. Easily forgiven.
