Fight Breaks Out in Front of Milano

PUBLISHED SEPTEMBER 27, 2007

A fight broke outside Milano Market Tuesday evening when one man smashed another in the face with a stick.

The assailant, sporting dreadlocks, left the store and reportedly seized a walking stick that was lying against the storefront. He brought it across the face of a middle-aged man, who was selling books outside the store. A fight between the two men transpired for a couple of minutes, but was broken up by the police.

Reports differ as to whether or not the bookseller provoked the man. According to one eyewitness, “There was some kind of loggerhead going on inside the store, and when the guy with the dreads walked out, the white guy was poking at him. That’s when the fight broke out.”

“Its not really fair,” she added. “If the white guy hadn’t poked him, nothing would have happened.”

According to eyewitness Mark Shreck, “they got into a scuffle. The guy in the white shirt didn’t fight back much.”

The assailant was overheard saying “I wish I’d cracked your skull in two, motherfucker.”
Seemingly incredulous, he added “Are you letting him get away with that? He knocks me to the ground and you’re putting me in handcuffs? What the fuck, man?”

Police present at the scene would not comment on the identity of either man, but quickly took the man with dreadlocks into custody and whisked him away from the scene.

Is Alex Peacocke related to Professor Chris Peacocke? If so, then it all makes sense.

This is the guy who beat the other guy with the stick, Einstein. And to the previous poster, who said "they both contribute very well to our community,", well - get a brain scan.

the man featured on the cover began the incident by sexually harrassing me and provoking my boyfriend. he was looking for a fight and wanted to hurt someone. the guy selling the books was, i assume, trying to protect us since no one else was helping.

Well, thanks for clarifying. It all seems to make sense now. Get the picture, you other jump-to-conclusionists, why the guy was locked-up?

And why are there only photographs of the black guy accompanying this story? Eyewitness Mark refers to the man in the white shirt, how do I know who was wearing a white shirt? The reporter just mentions a white guy and a guy with dreads. Maybe we should start identifying by types of shoes each was wearing in the next description, and then we could use something totally different like eye color. The coverage of this story is absurd. You say cops refused to identify either man- but you sure to have a great big picture of the black guy's face. Wow. The bias, intentional or not, is just so apparent in this story.

I am confused as to why the black man in this story is continually noted for his locks. It seems strange that his hairdo is such an important part of this story. Furthermore, though it is not ok to beat another person with a stick- it is also not ok to verbally harass. Both adults should be held responsible for their ludicrous behavior. But still, the hairdo thing in this article is super weird......If we're gonna talk in terms of hairdos, why didn't the bald guy possibly provoke the guy with dreadlocks (or the shaggy blond poke at the guy with dreadlocks, or whatever hair the white man had).

Both men are regulars in the neighboorhood judging by the descriptions and pictures and neither have ever committed any harm around here. If anything they both contribute very well to our community. Likely this is just a clash between two wellknown neighborhood personalities- that in a different town would have been an ignored scuffle, just the way we ignore a few frat boys fighting over something ridiculous. Sounds to me like the racism 'round this school is out of control, particularly of late.

verbal harassment IS by no means equal to physical violence. On any level. Look in jurisdiction, the penalty for physical crimes is more...even Bollingre verbally harassed Ahmad. It would of been different if he hit him with a stick

I like how one person is referred to as "the white guy" and the other is "the guy with dreads." It seems racism, like chivalry, is not dead. Blame the "white guy", because you just couldn't stop yourself from picking up a stick and trying to bludgeon him to death. Makes lots of sense. The sooner the Columbia area is "gentrified" the better.

Honestly, it doesn't matter if the guy outside the store provoked the man or not. In this country, you do not pick up a stick and beat another person. Period.
Good job, police. Lock this guy up.
