Women's Golf Finishes Eighth at Fall Intercollegiate
The Columbia women’s golf team had a tough outing this weekend, coming in eighth (335-323=658) at the Fall Women’s Intercollegiate, hosted by Yale. All the major Ivy programs were in the field except for the Tigers, who won the Princeton Invitational a weekend ago.
For the Lions, Nancy Shon was the lone member to crack the top 40, finishing in a tie for ninth with scores of 80 and 77 for the two rounds. Carly Nathanson shot 166 to tie for 43rd, followed by Sara Ovadia’s tie for 50th (84-82=166). Monique Kim tied for 59th (85-82=167), and Stevy Loy tied for 71st (89-87=176). Shon’s 77 on Sunday was the only time Columbia broke 80 during the event.
The Bulldogs were dominant on their home turf, posting a cumulative total of 619, eight shots ahead of runner-up Harvard. Four Bulldog players finished within the top 10. The Elis entered Sunday’s play with a six-stroke lead over Rollins College and was able to sustain windy conditions on Sunday for the win. Yale’s Lindsay Hong took home a share of the top individual honor as well. The other golfer to receive a first-place trophy was St. John’s Brittany Lambertson, who finished with a 71 to catch up to Hong. This was the Bulldogs’ first tournament victory since winning the Ivy championship in 2006.
In two weeks, the women’s team will be in Richmond, Va. at the Independence Golf Club to compete in the 2007 Richmond Spider Women’s Golf Invitational. The current Ivy champs will try to bounce back to the form that led to a strong runner-up showing at the Princeton Invitational earlier this season.
Columbia’s men’s team will also be making a trip to New Haven when it competes in Yale’s Men’s Invitational this Friday and Saturday. The Lions are coming off of a solid fifth-place finish at St. John’s two weeks ago.
