Golf Finishes 11th at Yale
The Columbia men’s golf team finished in the top half of the field at Yale’s annual home event in New Haven. This year’s Macdonald Cup featured a field of 26 teams, including six of the Ivies. The Bulldogs came up short by five strokes to eventual champion Texas Christian University.
The Lions shot a cumulative score of 613 over the two rounds, led by freshman Austin Quinten and senior August Quartararo. Quinten posted rounds of 74 and 75 for a tie for 21st, while Quartararo followed two shots behind in a tie for 33rd. The other notable scorer for the Lions was sophomore Cashel Rosier’s 149 (+9). Rosier played as an individual and tied Quinten for Columbia’s low score.
While losing out on the team title, the Bulldogs did lay claim to an individual title, which was won by Taylor Hakes. Hakes was the first Eli to win the event since three-time Ivy champion Bob Heintz in 1991. The junior from Coronado, Cali. had to hold off two TCU golfers, Travis Woolf and Tom Hoge. Hakes’ win meant that Yale swept both the men’s and women’s events that the school hosted in the last two weeks. Lindsay Hong won last weekend on the women’s side. Yale also placed two others in the top 10.
TCU had all five starters in the top 10. The top scorer for the Horned Frogs was James Sacheck in a tie for ninth at 146 (+6).
Out of the other Ivies, Dartmouth and Harvard finished ahead of the Lions, while Brown and Princeton trailed behind ties for 13th and 17th, respectively.
The men’s team will close out its fall campaign this weekend at the Big 5 Invitational, hosted by Penn. The Lions won the fall finale in 2006 behind solid performances from Chris Condello and Chris Arkin. The event will most likely feature all the Ivy League favorites.
