The Columbia field hockey team (5-5, 1-2 Ivy) is looking to create a win streak and to earn its sixth win of the season this afternoon against the Hofstra Pride (6-7).
The Light Blue handily defeated Brown, 4-0, this past weekend for their first Ivy win of the season. Freshman midfielder and two-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week Julia Garrison stepped up in the second period against the Bears, scoring two goals and tallying an assist. Garrison has already had a major impact with the Lions, starting all 10 games so far this season. Senior forward Liz Reeve and junior midfielder Megan Davidson scored the other two goals for the Lions. Junior goalkeeper Gena Miller also had a successful defensive performance, clinching her third shutout of the season.
The Pride has had a similar season to the Lions. After defeating the College of William and Mary this past Sunday by a score of 2-0, the Pride should be a formidable opponent for the Lions. Hofstra’s main weapons on offense are junior forward Brit Blankmeyer, who has scored a total of six goals this season—the most of any player on the team—and sophomore forward Kristin Thompson, who scored one of the two goals versus the Tribe last weekend. Defensively, however, the Pride has struggled, allowing more than two goals per contest on the year and four each in two of its past three games. Columbia needs to take advantage of defensive mistakes by Hofstra and must convert these offensive opportunities into goals.
The Lions have won eight straight home games, and this is their first game on the road since the dedication of their new facility, the Columbia Field Hockey Venue. The game will begin in Hempstead, N.Y. at 3 p.m.
