Horowitz Mischaracterizes Islam

With all due respect to freedom of speech and the awareness of terrorist activity in the political world, David Horowitz should rethink the arguments and ideas of “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week,” and look at the facts. This involves the true perception and moderate interpretation of Islam. The “Muslim terrorists” that Horowitz is pointing at are an incredibly minute minority in the Muslim community worldwide. Let me add that there are approximately 1.61 billion Muslims worldwide, and that Islam is the fastest-growing religion.

Firstly, Horowitz has completely misunderstood the concept of Islam. It means submission in order to attain peace. Therefore the whole idea of terrorism in our religion is completely devoid. It is only when Muslims must defend themselves and protect their rights that they are allowed to fight back. Isn’t that true for any country or any religion in the world? Isn’t it basic human instinct to fight and defend oneself? Furthermore, the fourth chapter of the Quran says, “Do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another).”

The extremists that Horowitz is pointing to are a minority that has misinterpreted Islam. They have used the religion of Islam for selfish motives and reasons to destroy peace in the world. I ask Horowitz to take a deeper look into this religion and to see what it really stands for. This relates to the way Muslims are instructed to treat one another and non-Muslims, and to behave as peaceful individuals in the society. There are so many verses of the Quran and sayings of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) that teach Muslims to act with respect and peace.

It makes me angry that I—a Muslim on this campus, a moderate Muslim living her life normally—have to suffer great ignorance. This goes toward other extremist Muslims and anyone else unwilling to take a reality check. I am offended by the treatment that I have been given, and I feel there is little respect for the Muslims who are here, pursuing an education and wanting to carry on with the practice of their faith. If this is truly the land of freedom, I would not have had to write this and express my deepest grief.
