Columbia's offense continued to struggle establishing the run in the team's 59-28 loss to the University of Pennsylvania today, while the Quakers ran all over the newly dedicated Robert K. Kraft Field.
Columbia (1-4, 0-2 Ivy) finished the day with only eight yards rushing, although senior quarterback Craig Hormann had a career-high 417 yards passing, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Sophomore wide receiver Austin Knowlin recorded 10 catches for 188 yards, including a 90 yard reception early in the first quarter. Knowlin was brought down at the one-yard line, where sophomore running back Ray Rangel scored to tie the game 7-7.
A touchdown by Penn’s Jordan Manning on a blocked field goal attempt from junior Jon Rocholl put the Quakers ahead 17-7 going into the second quarter. Penn’s main running back, senior Joe Sandberg played his first full game this season after being sidelined periodically by injuries earlier in the season. Sandberg averaged nine yards per carry and finished the day with 198 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
Two of Sandberg’s touchdowns came in the second quarter, each a result of Hormann's interceptions. Quaker quarterback Bryan Walker threw two more touchdowns in the second quarter to give Penn a 45-7 halftime lead.
The Lions came out of the locker room determined, scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter to make it 45-21, while keeping Penn off the scoreboard. Rangel added a second rushing touchdown and finished the day as Columbia’s leading rusher. After another Sandberg touchdown to open the fourth quarter, Columbia answered as Hormann threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Knowlin.
But on the ensuing kickoff, Penn’s Tyler Fisher returned Rocholl’s kick 96 yards for a score, putting the Quakers ahead 59-28. Wilson then took Hormann out of the game and put in sophomore transfer Shane Kelly for the final two drives. Kelly was 1-3 and finished as the Lions’ second leading rusher, with 11 yards.
