Who’s Afraid of Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week?

Why is an idea so frightening to some members of the Columbia community that they need to organize a campaign to suppress it before it is even aired? Why have some Columbians taken it upon themselves to conduct a hate campaign against students who want to discuss issues that affect us all? Why, on the other hand, were many of these same groups determined to welcome to Columbia a dictator who is providing weapons to kill American men and women in Iraq, who has called for the extermination of the Jewish state, and who presides over a regime that has murdered 4,000 gays and hung women from cranes for alleged sexual improprieties? If the welcome mat was okay for Ahmadinejad, why do these people want to deny a platform to Columbia students who are concerned about the threat of Islamo-Fascism?
Is Islamo-Fascism a threat? In fact, this is exactly the kind of question that will be discussed during the week of Oct. 22-26 at Columbia, unless campus leftists obstruct it the way they did Jim Gilchrist’s attempt to discuss the border issue last year. The fascist threat is real, and not just in Iraq or Iran.
Writing in a recent issue of Spectator, Zahra Khimji, a Columbia sophomore, complained that Islam should not be part of this discussion, while suggesting that the Islamo-Fascists constitute “an incredibly minute minority” of her religion. Would this were so. Some polls estimate that 10 percent of Muslims support Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. An al-Jazeera poll put the number at 50 percent. In other words, somewhere between 150 million and 750 million Muslims support a holy war against Christians, Jews, and other Muslims who don’t happen to be true believers in the Quran according to bin Laden. This is not an “incredibly minute” cohort.
I am sorry that Khimji feels discomfort as a result of the fear that terrorists have struck in the hearts of sensible people, but this complaint should be directed at the holy warriors themselves, not at their current and potential victims.
In fact, the very term “Islamo-Fascism” was coined by moderate Muslims who were being slaughtered in Algeria during the 1990s. A group now calling itself “Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb” killed between 150,000 and 200,000 “unclean” Muslims during that decade. In holding Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week, students at Columbia will be standing up for the survivors and for all Muslims under the threat of fanatical terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, and Hamas.
Is it possible to talk about these terrorist armies without reference to Islam? Hardly. They see themselves as engaged in a holy war that promises them tickets to paradise if they blow up Jewish children, Christian children, or atheist children for that matter. Their Islam—which includes the Palestinian Authority—anoints the killers as martyrs and saints for the murders they commit.
Is it possible to talk about these religious fanatics without reference to fascism? Consider the facts. The founding organization of their holy war is the Muslim Brotherhood, which is also the creator of al-Qaeda and Hamas. The founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hassan al-Banna, was an admirer of Hitler, as was Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the father of Palestinian nationalism. The Ba’ath Party which rules Syria, and ruled Iraq until the overthrow of Saddam, is modeled on Mussolini’s fascist party, and it is no accident that Hezbollah’s warriors and Iran’s Republican Guard goose-step like Hitler’s storm troopers—it is an homage.
They believe in their superiority and deny basic human dignities to those whom they regard as “infidels.” Their goal is to establish a theocratic totalitarian state that will control every aspect of an individual’s existence in accordance with the regime’s interpretation of Islamic law. This is a fascist agenda and creed.
Reasonable people may disagree. Our purpose in holding Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week is not to suppress disagreement or close the argument. That is the agenda of our opponents. Our goal is to initiate a discussion. We are not going to be intimidated by our intolerant opponents—we will not be dissuaded from opening a discussion of matters that are vital to us all.

I feel this conversation to be inane:
1) a week of "awareness" is not a crime as it is a constitutional right to assemble and to speak freely of one's beliefs (I know that while many will feel this is a chance to propagate unjustified Islamic hate however, free discussion is what allows America to be the great country that it is)
2) why is it even necessary to turn an awareness week into religion-bashing? Though it is true that many of America's current terrorist problems deal with Muslim Extremists, every Muslim is not a terrorist and many terrorists are not Muslims. Therefore, it would make more sense if the awareness week made people "aware" of the problem instead of using the week as a chance to target Muslims (creating religious divide and bigotry is never an answer. "do unto others as you would have others do unto you").
I was not concerned about the week being a rally of religious bigots, however, the reactions to this post concern me. America is, and always has, benefited diversity. Students of Columbia University should understand that better than the average American.

That is NOT what it says, I don't know what translation you are using, but the NIV version is different, and, furthermore, verse 4 has another sentence

Have you done any substantial research on your claim? Try reading Muhammad by Karen Armstrong, or any other non-blog related post.
Murder was a result of the necessity for self-defense as Muhammad life was put at stake multiple times from . Refer to the battles of Badr, Uhad, the Trench, and Khayber which were the earliest wars of Islamic history directly involving acts, hadiths, and messages from the prophet.
Rape is probably one of the most absurd arguments, as Muhammad was NEVER recorded even by fantic anti-Islamists to have found any proof of raping. He did have six wives and married impoverished women because at that time, when there was no civil justice and lots of tribal warfare, many women were left without men and therefore support. HOWEVER, this polygamy was only after his first wife who was fifteen years older than him died. Also, his first wife, Khadija was the first Muslim, A WOMAN is the first Muslim.
Second, if you are willing to break stereotypes and care enough to be less misinformed, in the Qu'ran, it directly states one can have up to four wives, IF ONE TREATS THEM ALL EQUALLY, and the line after says, this is not probable.
Muhammad was referred to as Al-Sadiq and Al-Amin (the Trustworthy and Reliant) and a vast majority of Arab traders entrusted him to take the caravans and goods across the desert as one can imagine there was a lot of raiding back then. However, very few people toyed with even trying to rid Muhammad as he was a friend to many.
Enslavement was common as a cultural aspect in Arabia but Muhammad made sure that when he married rich Khadija that she let go of all her slaves. Also, as recommended by Muhammad, he told his best friend Abu Bhakar to buy the African Billal who was enslaved and ended up being the first Muezzin or "caller of prayer" after he was bought away from greedy Arab merchants.
Beheading was a traditional way of decently and humanely killing one's enemy and a tradition way before Muhammad. He did not invent beheading if that is what you are insinuating. Also, greed was the opposite of Muhammad as he encouraged within Medina the generous giving to the poor and the ritual of Zakat (alms giving) was made by post-Muhammad ulama or educated elders as one of the 5 pillars in direct mimicry of Muhammad's actions towards the poor.
Pedophilia is of course also taken out of cultural context. We know that Muhammad youngest wife was Aisha who was over 15 years old when they consummate their marriage. This was a cultural or traditional practice back then. If you look in old Eastern societal traits more than just a half a century ago, then female children have been wed at the age of 15 and 16 to men much older in age. While this practice is not typical at all in Western culture, there are lengthy papers drawn up by professors as to why the traditions of the time were the way they were.

One must remember that due to the state of war between dar al-Islam and dar al-harb," reuses de guerre", i.e., systematic lying to the infidel, must be considered part and parcel of Islamic tactics. What is dar al-Islam and dar al-harb? i.e., the House of Islam and the House of War?
The violent injunctions of the Quran and the violent precedents set by Muhammad set the tone for the Islamic view of politics and of world history. Islamic scholarship divides the world into two spheres of influence, the House of Islam (dar al-Islam) and the House of War (dar al-harb). Islam means submission, and so the House of Islam includes those nations that have submitted to Islamic rule, which is to say those nations ruled by Sharia law. The rest of the world, which has not accepted Sharia law and so is not in a state of submission, exists in a state of rebellion or war with the will of Allah. It is incumbent on dar al-Islam to make war upon dar al-harb until such time that all nations submit to the will of Allah and accept Sharia law. Islam's message to the non-Muslim world is the same now as it was in the time of Muhammad and throughout history: submit or be conquered. The only times since Muhammad when dar al-Islam was not actively at war with dar al-harb were when the Muslim world was too weak or divided to make war effectively.
But the lulls in the ongoing war that the House of Islam has declared against the House of War do not indicate a forsaking of jihad as a principle but reflect a change in strategic factors. It is acceptable for Muslim nations to declare hudna, or truce, at times when the infidel nations are too powerful for open warfare to make sense. Jihad is not a collective suicide pact even while "killing and being killed" (Sura 9:111) is encouraged on an individual level. For the past few hundred years, the Muslim world has been too politically fragmented and technologically inferior to pose a major threat to the West. But that is changing.
In times when the greater strength of dar al-harb necessitates that the jihad take an indirect approach, the natural attitude of a Muslim to the infidel world must be one of deception and omission. Revealing frankly the ultimate goal of dar al-Islam to conquer and plunder dar al-harb when the latter holds the military trump cards would be strategic idiocy. Fortunately for the jihadists, most infidels do not understand how one is to read the Quran, nor do they trouble themselves to find out what Muhammad actually did and taught, which makes it easy to give the impression through selective quotations and omissions that "Islam is a religion of peace." Any infidel who wants to believe such fiction will happily persist in his mistake having been cited a handful of Meccan verses and told that Muhammad was a man of great piety and charity. Digging only slightly deeper is sufficient to dispel the falsehood.
While not all Muslims are terrorists, virtually all terrorists are Muslims. This should tell us something about Islam. According to independent surveys, eighty-five percent of terrorist acts worldwide are directly attributable to the Islamic faith. Yet Muslims represent less than twenty percent of the world's population. Since the militants are called "a radical minority" let's say that only twenty percent of Muslims are jihad fighters in Allah's Cause. If that's true, four percent of the world's population takes Islam seriously. One out of twenty-five humans emulate Muhammad's example and follow Allah's orders as revealed in the Qur'an and Hadith. These men and women are 2,000% more lethal than the rest of us.
So I go back to my original question, is violence integral to Islam? It's a valid question. One does NOT need to do substantial research but to just dig a little deeper or better yet read the Quran and see for yourself.
Of course you are right, the bible passages the commenter mentions are from Ephesians, Timothy, Titus, Luke, John, Hosea and others. It does not say GOD or Allah. Yet Muslims believe every WORD in Koran is ALLAH'S.
The violent Biblical passages are irrelevant to the question of whether Islam is violent.
And also, the violent passages in the Bible certainly do no amount to a standing order to commit violence against the rest of the world. Unlike the Koran, the Bible is a huge collection of documents written by different people at different times in different contexts, which allows for much greater interpretative freedom.
But this is an old trick of Islamists and their apologists the Leftist/ Moonbats. They do not address the issue but change the argument. You know, when you talk about Jihadist violent attacks TODAY, they will say but LOOK at the Christian violence during the Crusades. Never addressing the actual Jihadi violence today.
Violence committed in the name of other religions is logically unconnected to the question of whether Islam is violent. But, by mentioning the Crusades, the hope of the Islamic apologist Leftist Moonbat is to draw attention away from Islamic violence and paint religions in general as morally equivalent.
So, help me with this.
How many Jews and Christians still comply with those passages today, in the twenty-first century? And in which countries does such compliance occur without criticism and ridicule?
Compared to the strict compliance with the Qur'an and the Sunnah of Muhammad in Muslim majority nations, don't you think your attempt at moral relativism and equivelance is just a tad juvenile?

This conversation was via e-mail with myself and a Columbia student. The correspondences are from 2006 July 20- September 18. This was in the context of the Israeli invasion and bombing of civilians in Lebanon. what criteria is that not (state) terrorism!?
The irony of the e-mails is that the self-identified Asian student says "...i am sick and tired of people like you from the undeveloped world pretending to know what's going on in the world...". What a great attitude for our future leaders of America and the world to have.
I do not think this student represents all Columbia students views. I'm sure there are many students at Columbia who have a much more well rounded view on world history and global politics.

Nobody has explained what the hell "Islamo-fascism" is? Wait a minute, I see that Robert Spencer and David Horowitz point out that it was a term coined by Algerians who were struggling for democracy, fighting against armed fundamentalist forces. That makes sense. So is one to assume that this awareness week will bring attention to the fact that the U.S. helped oust Iran's first democratically elected leader, a fact that directly lead to the rise of the "Islamo-Fascist" regime that's in power today? And is it safe to assume that "Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week" will make people aware of the fact that the U.S. gave financial and military support to one Osama bin Laden, in addition to helping develop the educational programs that radicalized Islamic youth in many Arab nations? If so, this will be some week!

Evangelical leaders such as Falwell would forcefully condemn Christians who would utter such vile curses against Jews, but why don’t they dare condemn the hatred of Jews who utter vile curses against Christians.

Islam means submission, and so the House of Islam includes those nations that have submitted to Islamic rule, which is to say those nations ruled by Sharia law. The rest of the world, which has not accepted Sharia law and so is not in a state of submission, exists in a state of rebellion or war with the will of Allah. It is incumbent on dar al-Islam to make war upon dar al-harb until such time that all nations submit to the will of Allah and accept Sharia law. Islam's message to the non-Muslim world is the same now as it was in the time of Muhammad and throughout history: submit or be conquered.
Due to the state of war between dar al-Islam and dar al-harb, reuses de guerre, i.e., systematic lying to the infidel, must be considered part and parcel of Islamic tactics.
