Men’s tennis heads to Princeton tomorrow for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Regional Championships, an indoor tournament that will feature the best 128 colleges and universities in the Northeast. Finalists at the ITA are guaranteed a berth at the National Indoor Championships later this fall.
Senior and top singles player Jared Drucker, who made a fabulous run to the finals in the singles flight of last year’s tournament, will not make the trip to Princeton. Doctors discovered a hairline fracture in Drucker’s wrist three days ago and it was revealed that he had been playing with the injury for the past two weeks.
“It’s from over-use, it couldn’t be prevented. I played with it during ECACs. I’ll be out six weeks in total,” Drucker said.
Drucker will be sorely missed, but his absence will give other players in the lineup a chance to show their abilities. Drucker thinks the ITA tournament will provide a perfect opportunity for his teammates to hone their skills.
“We have a lot of guys who can play number one, and it will be a good test for them,” Drucker said. “Everyone in the Northeast is going to be there. It’s the best players from the region. What it comes down to is that it’s good practice.”
Women’s tennis will also compete in the ITA Regional Championships on Thursday. Their tournament is located in Norfolk, Virginia.
Coming off a flawless win against Seton Hall, 7-0, the women’s team is on a high. Freshman Stephanie Zilberman mopped the floor with her opponent at number one singles, Denise Liebschner, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Nina Suda pulled out a gritty win at number two, defeating Danielle Viola in a final tiebreaker, 10-4. The match gave Ilene Weintraub her first 7-0 victory as head coach of the Lions.
The Columbia women will look to capitalize on their growing momentum this Thursday in Virginia.
