Police Use DNA Test On TC Noose

PUBLISHED OCTOBER 19, 2007

The New York Police Department’s Hate Crime Task Force is using DNA fingerprinting technology to identify the person who hung the noose on a Teachers College professor’s door, but still have no suspects.

On Wednesday, TC Director of Communications Diane Dobry said she called the president’s office in response to an inquiry about rumors that Suniya Luthar, TC professor of psychology and education and a purported rival of Madonna Constantine, on whose door the noose was hung, committed the hate crime. She said these rumors were unfounded. “No one in the administration imagined that she has any connection with the incident. The detectives investigating this have never suspected any involvement in the incident,” Dobry said.

Later that day, at TC President Susan Fuhrman’s State of the College address, Fuhrman denounced the press for implicating Luthar.

“On the most personal level, the hanging of the noose targeted Madonna Constantine, one of our very distinguished African American faculty members,” Fuhrman said. “It also embroiled Suniya Luthar ... she herself became the target of an awful and vicious press campaign.”

As the press descended on Columbia last week, the New York Post quoted police sources as saying that Luthar had replaced Constantine when she was on sabbatical, and that Luthar was upset to give up the post when Constantine returned. The Post also reported that Constantine had filed a defamation suit that sought damages “in excess of $100,000” against Luthar.

Paul Browne, the NYPD’s deputy commissioner for public information, also denied last Wednesday that the police suspected Luthar, saying, “that is flatly wrong.” But the Post and other news outlets continued to report on Luthar.

Browne said Thursday that the NYPD is using DNA testing of the noose in efforts to identify the perpetrator but that no leads had surfaced yet. “We haven’t identified a suspect yet,” he said, specifically denying that Luthar was a suspect.

The Hate Crime Task Force is still speaking with all faculty members in the department.
Michael Osgood, supervising investigator for the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force, said hate crimes in the city generally occur at random. “There is no pattern. Spatially and temporally, they occur in a random manner.”

Fuhrman said that, despite being certain of Luthar’s innocence, she could not comment about Luthar last week because of legal and privacy concerns. “I regret that in the effort to protect her privacy and under legal advice not to comment about her in any questions about the incident even when specifically asked about her, we didn’t offer her the public support she deserves,” Fuhrman said.

Constantine fired for plagarism. So now we know what was up w/ the noose.

Why are persons of color permitted to take the noose as solely offensive to persons of color? Lots of persons of no color (colorless persons) were hanged for stealing horses and cattle. Saddam Hussein and his two sons were hanged. Does that make this a hate crime against Iraqis too? Against Sunnis? Or the Baathist Party?
What about the Nazi doctors who were hanged after the Nuremberg Trials. Does that make this an anti German hate crime as well. Is there no end to things words and items that are offensive only to persons of color? In Utah it is or was until recently a form of capital punishment. Is this an anti Utahn hate crime or anti Mormon hate crime? Why are none of these groups marching outside of TC?

You've already answered your own question. A form of capital punishment, meaning that those that were hanged were tried, convicted and punished by the law. On the contrary, Blacks were hanged for simply being Black, by individauls who were not on the side of the law. They didn't have to steal any horses of cattles, or committ crimes against humanity. They were simply dragged from their homes and lynched on the nearest tree as a form of entertainment for white men. Therefore, the noose was used as a way of tormenting Blacks. You should read more of your history and you will eventually understand.

If it is a hoax, will it ever be revealed to the public? I doubt we'll ever hear the DNA results or who they think did it. Will someone answer for me something - since when is hanging a noose a hate crime? I think the public should know this!

Insinuations by elements of the media that Professor Suniya Luthar, a senior faculty member of Teachers College, is somehow involved in the noose hanging incident are deplorable and should be responded to with the utmost condemnation and outrage. As a student at Teachers College, I would like to express profound solidarity with both Professor Luthar and Professor Constantine, also a senior TC faculty member, during these times that are incredibly trying for them and indeed for our entire community. Elements of the media that have embroiled and tarnished the names of individuals who the police have not even named as suspects simply should be ashamed of themselves. One wants to ask how many such individuals within these elements of the media would feel if it they themselves were implicated in a similar incident without even being named suspects. There is clearly a lack of civility, humanity, and critical thought behind these reports. All of us, whether students at Teachers College, Columbia, or as citizens of this nation and this world, should voice our displeasure and disgust with these media elements for apparently being more interested in selling news than on reporting the immediate facts of the incident and in doing so inflicting harm on two accomplished and respected individuals who have devoted their lives to understanding problems associated with race and ethnicity.

French proverb: "Qui s'excuse, s'accuse." (Who excuses himself accuses himself). Or, in this case, "her."

Or, "herself." Or, whatever. What's your "educated" point of view, Clouseau?

lol, your's first.

isn't the PC "peace and love" between these two ethnic lady profs wonderful? As usual, "it's all good" in PC Land!

hahah! A DNA TEST??? OMG...you'd think someone was killed here? Jesus its just a damn noose. You liberals are mentally ill. And besides, we all know the black professor did it.

I could have told her this wouldn't work.

This stinks of a HOAX!!!!!

Was Constantine's DNA tested?
