Three people were hospitalized when a yellow cab collided with a car at the corner of 114th Street and Broadway Sunday night.
At about 7:40 p.m., a silver Audi sedan heading eastbound on 114th Street was struck by the cab on the front passenger-side door, sending the sedan spinning into a lamppost. The three passengers of the Audi were very badly injured and taken to St. Luke’s Hospital. The driver of the cab was uninjured.
According to eyewitness Leo Sussan, the V6 Audi Sport was “clearly speeding” down 114th Street when the cab slammed into its passenger-side door. Sussan, a student at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, was on his cell phone when he saw the crash. He said he immediately hung up and began to administer first aid to the passengers of the sedan.
Sunil Chandra Sarkar, the driver of the yellow cab, said that the Audi had run a red light. Sarkar was not carrying any passengers at the time of the accident.
According to Sarkar, who was visibly shaken by the accident, he was in the middle lane of Broadway when the Audi came across his lane.
“How can I control my car, he’s running the red light?” Sarkar said.
Robert Fideo, who was “around the corner” when the accident happened, said, “I heard what happened and I came running over.” Fideo also said that it took about five minutes for the police to arrive at the scene.
He added, “Yellow cabs cause all the accidents in New York ... they never allow for emergency people, they own the street.”
It was the second crash in the area in two days. At least one person was hospitalized when a cab and another vehicle collided at 113th Street and Broadway in the early hours of Sunday morning. Both vehicles sustained serious damage.
