Lions Defeat Rutgers in Final Nonconference Game

PUBLISHED OCTOBER 29, 2007

The Columbia field hockey squad improved its record to 9-6 (3-2 Ivy) with a 2-1 victory at Rutgers (8-11) on Sunday.

Amy Lewis of Rutgers struck first off an attack penalty corner 4:40 into the match, assisted by Corinne Bach and Melissa Bowman.

At 23:07, forward Liz Reeve responded for the Lions, scoring off the rebound, assisted by forward Ariel Leon.

1:21 into the second half, forward Julia Garrison scored the eventual game-winner off an attack corner penalty. Reeve notched the assist on the play, as Garrison picked up her team-leading fifth goal of the year.

“[Garrison has] definitely adapted really well to the collegiate game,” junior defensive back Jacqui Munro said. “She’s really produced for us on the scoreboard, which is huge. I think Julia’s going to be a really great player—I think she has shown considerable improvement just in this season alone.”

Munro was also impressed with her defensive unit’s performance, which allowed only one goal.

“We’ve had a lot of practice on our defensive corners all season and I think that’s become a real strength of ours, although Rutgers has a pretty strong offensive unit,” Munro said. “We managed to hold them to that single goal in the first half, which was pretty challenging because of all their corners.” The Light Blue defense performed admirably, holding the Scarlet Knights—who notched an impressive 12 corners during the game—to a single score.

The Lions welcome Yale to the Columbia Field Hockey Venue on Tuesday at 3 p.m. for a makeup of Friday’s game, which was postponed due to inclement weather.
