Systemic Racism Here?

PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 2, 2007

Like many other members of the Columbia community, I was shocked by the response to the recent bias incidents on campus. However, my dismay did not result from the actions of the administration, but rather from those of my fellow students, some of whom have seized upon recent events and twisted their meaning to reflect an activist political agenda. Not only do I believe that this smacks of political opportunism, but more seriously, it demeans the importance of the cause—opposition to racism—that these individuals supposedly represent.

The first point that needs to be addressed is the assertion that racism at Columbia is not only pervasive, but also condoned and tacitly encouraged by the University. In his Spectator article “Not Just an Isolated Incident” (Oct. 26), Andrew Tillet-Saks listed four racist incidents—and alleged several more—that pointed to systemic bigotry within the Columbia community. He then made the assertion that Columbia was responsible for these abhorrent acts because of the racist climate created by the Core Curriculum and the administration’s insensitive response to hate crimes. Before we accept this statement at face value, we should first apply some rational scrutiny in order to determine both the scope of the problem and its causes.

Let’s begin by assuming for a moment that all four of the racist events listed by Mr. Tillet-Saks were undeniably perpetrated by members of the Columbia community, despite the lack of evidence substantiating this claim. Either way, four racist incidents since 2004 in a University of 20,000 hardly seem systemic and institutionalized.

Moreover, this doesn’t even take into account the student turnover at Columbia, which would increase the number of students (and possible bigots). Compared with hate-crime statistics for New York City as a whole, racism at Columbia is actually less common. Columbia has a rate of .02 percent hate crimes per person (assuming 4 crimes divided by 20,000 people), while the city average is .024 percent (1900 crimes between 2000 and 2004 divided by 8 million people). Additionally, one should consider that many of the crimes in the New York City statistic reflect incidents of murder and physical assault, actions that thankfully have not occurred at Columbia.

Even though racism at Columbia is less pervasive than in the city as a whole, I, like most reasonable individuals, consider any instances of racism to be too many. This is why it is important to understand the causes behind these actions. During my two years at Columbia, I have consistently heard many activists argue that racism at Columbia is the result of the cultural insensitivity of the Core, combined with the University’s “hostile” policies toward both ethnic students and academic departments. If the causes of bigotry were actually this simple, however, I doubt racism would be as troubling an issue as it truly is.

Firstly, the idea that the Eurocentricity of the Core creates bigotry is fallacious for several reasons. One of them is that the Core is not as Eurocentric as some activists would have us believe. The Core includes four classes that could be reasonably considered Eurocentric: Literature Humanities, Contemporary Civilization, Art Humanities, and Music Humanities. However, this is offset by the two Major Cultures classes and four semesters of foreign languages, which are designed to be diversity-building elements. Yet, even if we do assume for a moment that the Core is Eurocentric, how does this engender racism? Are we to allege that every bigot on this campus is a student of 4000-person Columbia College, spurred to action because of the cultural insensitivity of the Core?

This question actually leads us to the larger issue of what motivates a racist. Does someone hang a noose on a door because they feel that Columbia University’s lack of funding to the African-American studies department legitimizes their actions? Or rather, is it because of emotional and social insecurity, isolation, and most importantly, ignorance? Ultimately, when we use reason—the foundation of CC—to examine these outrageous contentions, we quickly see that they are little more than crass political moves designed more to elicit emotion than rational discourse.

The final point to consider is the University’s attitude toward racism as a whole. Columbia’s administration has been routinely attacked for its supposed intransigence in response to hate crimes. However, what exactly would be an appropriate response? Would University President Lee Bollinger’s presence at an anti-racism rally seriously make it any more effective? To assert that Lee Bollinger—the man who defended affirmative action in the Supreme Court—is not just insensitive to minority issues, but is actually a closet racist, is absurd. The administration’s actions have been motivated by the correct belief that the appropriate response to hate crimes is to allow the police to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute the offenders.

Fundamentally, Columbia University is not a racist institution. Slavery, segregation, and the Holocaust were all racist events—Manhattanville is not. Racism is a powerful charge, and just because activists need something to protest does not give them the right to make libelous accusations against their own University.

Hijacking issues and incidents by labeling them as examples of racism is a dangerous tactic. It not only limits the open discourse of our University community, but more importantly, it demeans the value of the term, so that when real racist events do occur, they don’t receive the consideration they deserve.

the comments on this article reveal the essence of the social position this article represents. some can tactfully mask it....while others cannot.

Seriously jumbled prose. Get a proofreader.

Thank you Jon. You took the words right out of my mouth, that was a sensible article advocating some moderation and stable headed thinking in a time when both pulses and egos are racing. This article represents neither plain-neutrality nor apathy in a moral conflict, it's actually examining the issue from a practical, results oriented angle. Yes acts of lunacy like hanging nooses occur, but finally someone has thought about how best to minimize these acts rather than how to maximize a protest (which is probably counter-productive to our cause of reducing vandalism and bigoted graffiti).

When Columbia becomes another Jena, I will personally thank Mr. Hollander for it.

You'll thank him when six black guys beat up on one white guy? At least we know where you stand.

You very clearly have a shoddy understanding of current events. I'm very sorry for you.

Great, it's the old "confronters are really just afraid of the truth and since we're the ones being confronted, that must mean we're the truth" argument. Straw man arguments. Did you learn about them in University Writing or were you too busy shouting the professor down for asking you to read something not written by a fellow radical?

Ha. It wasn't an argument, it was an honest question. One you're apparently not willing to answer or to ask yourself :)

No one that I know of is flippantly saying 'racism occurs because of the Eurocentrism of the core.' Addressing racism within our institutions is simply the logical response to racist, hate filled acts. The real question is, why wouldn't you want to address racism in our institutions? What is it that's so threatening, what is it that you stand to lose, if it's addressed? I hope one day you'll join us in the march to justice.

Racist minority activists just can't seem to get enough of shitting where they eat.

Good one, Hollander. But, even as you bend over backwards to make your point, unfortunately, you're ultimately talking to the wall. Know that 90% of the people on this campus agree with your take, and are happy to read a rational essay for a change.

Another hate crime happened yesterday at TC.

Mr.Hollander has the distinction of being the first Spectator author that I agree with. He misses one point though: the so called "racist" incidents such as the noose and swastikas are all fake and staged. The real issue appears to be the core curriculum of CU..which is Euro-centric.

Anything European (read:white) to the progressive leftist and especially to black radicals is disgusting. These people hate whites with a passion. They also hate America and capitalism. Therefore, they hate the core curriculum and want it replaced with so called "ethnic" studies. I'm not clear on how learning about the cuisine of Tanzania is important to learn if you want to become, say, an investment banker in Chicago.

The people screaming for "change" are nothing more than a vocal minority. I would wager that the shrill whining for the replacement of anything "white" in the school system probably comes from less than 1% of the student population. Most of whom apparently write for this "newspaper", and will regrettably come to join our wonderful mainstream news media in the coming years.

The Death Of The West, folks. It's what they want.

Dear Columbia Spectator:

Clearly, the author (Mr. Jonathan Hollander) of this article who is apparently defending Columbia President Bollinger seems to have little, if any, knowledge about Mr. Bollinger's ways and methods of being opportunistic and advancing his own career and agenda through the most devious and arguably illegal methods even from his days at the University of Michigan.

It is time reasonable people woke up and realized that his (Mr. Bollinger's) so-called "Affirmative Action" programs were a big scam and a hoax and have been a perfect screen of smoke and mirrors for continuing his agenda of institutionalized racial discrimination, anti-Semitism, and other forms of racial subjugation, illegal harassment and direct intimidation. Mr. Hollander, do you see any Black Vice Presidents or in any other senior positions in the Columbia Administration and or do you see any Black Professors as Heads of Departments or in other senior faculty positions???? WAKE UP, MY FRIEND!!!

What Columbia University needs is an actual action plan, not just empty talk and some feel-good statements on paper, to end the continuing institutionalized racial discrimination, anti-Semitism, homphobia, and other forms of harassment and direct intimidation that has unfortunately become rampant at this 250-years old prestigious university.

How can Columbia President Bollinger truthfully fight the continuing racism. anti-Semitism and other forms of hatred if he himself immediately fires any employee who stands up for equal opportunity for the Blacks and other minorities and or for even suggesting the peaceful organization and formation of an anti-discrimination "Minority Employees Association" similar to those already in existence for decades at other prestigious universities across America.

The Whites, Blacks and other minorities of Columbia University are simply tired of the hypocrisies, the deceptive talk, and some fake affirmation action programs of this Columbia Administration. Any affirmative action programs, without equal opportunity, and that is designed to promote only the personal careers of President Bollinger and his Administration is something which is hated by everybody (Blacks and Whites alike.)

According to the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, Columbia University has had probably the worst Black Students enrollment record among the Ivy Leagues. Using its money, power, prestige, and influence the Columbia Administration has so far been very effective in blocking some major Class Action litigation that could ENFORCE any truthful equal opportunity and a collegial atmosphere for people of ALL races, religions, and ethnicities.

It is now time for the Columbia faculty, students, administrators, and all concerning government officials, including elected officials, to immediately act and bring about some truthful and lasting changes at this one of the best and most prestigious universities of the World.

Yes, I am sorry that this is America, too.

I mean, look at all those racist black people screwing up all those innocent white people!

From article:
"Andrew Tillet-Saks listed four racist incidents ... that pointed to systemic bigotry within the Columbia community..."

Let's see:
The quota system, which is the systematic and massive discrimination against whites and orientals.

Raced based scholarships given to nonwhites.

Support for "La Raza" -- The Race -- groups, a common term used by Chicanos to show their racial consciousness and racial aggression.

Racially defined nonwhite organizations on campus. Racially defined nonwhite leaders on campus.

There are no egalitarians in America, only pretend egalitarians. Out of one side of their mouth they champion equality, out of the other side they aggressively support inequality and discrimination when in their individual or group interests.

When white Gentiles do this they are called neo-Nazis or racists. When Jews and nonwhites do this they are called various names: Zionists, civil rights advocates, politically correct, multiculturalists, anti-racists....

I respect the author's defense of Columbia. I, as a black person, have often come to Columbia's defense - when I felt it was the right thing to do. But I believe that the author is looking for something that does not exist - and saying it isn't there!

Racism today is no longer totally about segregation, violence, and all that it has been. It has taken a more subtle path:

Lack of diversity in the faculty and administration

Yes, the Core Curriculum - soft racism (it doesn't call us niggers. In fact it doesn't mention us at all!)

The characterization of gentrification as somehow natural in a free society - when clearly it is a white against black phenomenon

Bollinger's calling the expansion "a good thing" - wasn't WWII a good thing? It rid the world of Nazis (temporarily) - so the ends justify the means

The atmosphere is polluted at Columbia now, I feel. Columbia is way behind the times in addressing diversity. Unfortunalely it is blinded and paralyzed by wealth and power.

Hmm, nice strategy. There's no significant or widespread racism left to speak of - so, in order for you to have something to keep talking about, you re-define 'racism' (as something that is not racism) so you can claim that there's still significant, widespread 'racism'.

If you're clever enough in re-defining racism, it also has the added bonus that you can ignore the obvious fact:

You're a disgusting racist yourself.

I'm tired of this depraved ideology about keeping areas "racially pure". You are obviously filled with irrational racist hate at 'Whitey' and want to keep him in his place.

Sorry buddy, but this is America - you don't get to tell me that I can build, live, or visit a neighborhood just because my skin isn't the 'right color' according to your sick world view.

Question: When did "significant or widespread racism" end. I want to put the date on my calendar.

Thanks

Hey, just cause no white-folk like you because of your hate and anti-causcasian sentiment that you spew so readily doesn't mean they're racist, it means you're an a-hole buddy.

It ends the second you zip up and leave the masturbatory fantasyland of victimhood you're pretending is reality.

Oh! Another Yalie!
