Columbia’s volleyball team will look to salvage what is left of its league schedule when it faces Yale and Brown in the final two home games of the season this weekend at Levien Gymnasium.

The Lions (3-18, 0-10 Ivy), have suffered 10 consecutive defeats at the hands of their league opponents this season. They have been shutout in their last four games and have lost their last 15 sets dating back to their 3-1 loss at Brown on Oct. 19. Overall, they have been outscored by 457 points, allowing their opponents to score 2,029 points against them this year.

Last weekend’s home games against Penn and Princeton did not help the Lions get back on track, as they were swept in both games against their Ivy League opponents. Columbia dropped its match to the Quakers 3-0 (30-28, 30-16, 32-30) behind Amalia Viti’s game-high 12 kills. Columbia showed some resiliency by rallying from an eight-point deficit in the final set, but it could not overcome 11 kills apiece from Penn’s Anna Shlimak and Natalie Drucker. Princeton’s Sheena Donohue recorded 20 kills en route to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-19, 30-19) Tiger victory. Natalie Gerling paced the Lions with 10 kills in the loss.

Columbia didn’t fare much better in Tuesday night’s nonconference road game against Fordham. The Rams posted 48 kills and the Lions left the Bronx as the victims of yet another sweep (30-19, 30-26, 30-22). Gerling and Cassie Ligh put up double figures in kills, scoring 13 and 10, respectively.

Brown and Yale both recorded wins against the Lions two weeks ago. Brown defeated Columbia (28-30, 30-20, 30-15, 30-19) in Providence, marking the last time Columbia won a set in conference play. The Lions hope this game will translate into their first league win of the season. Defeating Yale won’t be an easy task, as Columbia will have to contend with Ivy League player of the week, Ally Mendenhall. The junior setter posted 55 assists, 14 digs, and nine kills in what was nearly her first career triple double. Columbia’s Ligh, who leads the team with 185 digs, will try to slow Mendenhall down.

Columbia will play Yale at 7 p.m. on Friday and Brown at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
