Field Hockey Season Ends on High Note
The Columbia Field Hockey squad finished the year on a high note, defeating Harvard (8-9, 4-3 Ivy) 2-1 at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue.
Freshman forward Julia Garrison continued to show her aggressiveness on offense, firing off four shots on goal, including scoring the first goal of the game 10:09 into the contest. Lauren Hanna built the Lions’ lead up to 2-0 with 16:39 remaining in the half on a goal assisted by Megan Davidson.
Despite Harvard’s two Ivy League-leading assisters Maggie McVeigh and Jana Berglund the Crimson couldn’t get much going in the second half, mustering only two shots and one score from Devon Shapiro—assisted by Berglund—with 12:33 to go in the game.
The Lions star goalkeeper Gena Miller had a pretty light day, considering the Crimson only shot the ball five times the entire game. She finishes the year first in the Ivy League with an average 0.97 goals allowed per game.
“We outplayed them from the opening minute,” Miller said. “We got out to a very fast start. We broke through their midfield really quickly and got some excellent shots on goal.”
Garrison also finishes the year with some impressive numbers. She led the team in shots (51), goals (7), and points (16). “She’s only going to get better from here,” Miller said. “She’s one of many strong freshmen we have on our team.”
The Lions (11-6, 5-2 Ivy) take second place in the Ivy League and finish with their best overall record since 2000 (13-6) and their best Ivy record ever. The squad also tops the year off with its fifth consecutive Ivy victory and its 11th consecutive home victory dating back to last year, including an undefeated 8-0 home record this year. Head coach Katie Beach has made significant strides with the team this year—this season marks her first winning record as Lions head coach.
The Ivy champion Princeton Tigers (6-1 Ivy) officially closed the Ivy League’s season after they lost the play-in match for the NCAA tournament against UMass.
